GIRLS BUILD LA EXPO
Arrival and Departure: Plan to arrive at West Adams (1500 W Washington Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90007) by 8:30am to set up.
Detailed info on transportation can be found here.
Food and Beverages: Lunch will be provided for all attendees. Light snacks and water will be available for the day as well but please be prepared to take care of your own dietary needs.
Presentation Set-up: Presentations will occur simultaneously - think science fair. Each team will have a table to set up visual aids. There will be LAUSD wireless access (though some outside sites are blocked by the district). It will be busy and loud outside so we recommend keeping things simple, and direct. If you are using a laptop/iPad to present, please make sure it is fully charged as there will be very limited electrical outlets available. Bring visuals - pictures, posters, artifacts from your work. Be creative!
Dress Code: Be comfortable! This is Saturday and it will be warm. If your team has matching shirts that would be great. If not just dress knowing you will be outside and you will be pretty active throughout the morning and afternoon.
Timeline
Arrival and set-up 8:00am - 9:00am
Pre-Judging 9:00am - 9:30am
Judging 9:30am - 11:30am/
Judging timing and team breakdown
Awards Ceremony 11:30am - 12:30pm
Community Fair and Celebration 12:30pm - 1:30pm
Presentation Time: We ask that you keep your presentations to judges to 8 minutes with an additional five minutes for judge Q&A. This will be tight. Make sure that you have a pitch down that hits your highlights! You can choose which team member(s) will present - this could be students who have strong public speaking skills or you can encourage all of your team members to have a part. We will leave this up to you to decide. There will be five minutes in between rounds of judging.
Format: Starting at 9:30am judges and other attendees (your families and others) will circulate to see different projects. We will announce when it is time for judges to rotate to hear from the next team. There are no set requirements for the format but click here for presentation suggestions. Be creative, and think about how you can stand out from all of the other great projects.
Judges: Expo judges will be assigned to your team in advance. By May 13th, your judge will have previously reviewed your website / Submittable. They will know a little about your project, so this will be the time to share all of the detail, and the stories that will help you stand out.
Scoring: Judges will all be using a rubric. The scores from the rubric will be combined with a score from your website. We will not know which teams are receiving the scholarships until the day of the Expo! Immediately after judging everyone will enter the auditorium and we will announce the winning teams.
