PROJECT STATUS:
Team retreats should be in progress! Remember, this is your project and meant to serve your community. All the resources we provide are recommendations. 

WEBINARS:
Thank you to everyone who joined us last week on our first webinar! We reviewed the timeline, shared some great tips, and centered the project around the girls and your community. For more detailed explanations please check out the webinar and slidedeck from last week. Also archived on our webinar page.

DUE DECEMBER 15th:
Link to Website - we don't expect content yet. Try to start your site and add a picture, create pages, and try to add your application video. Check out the tech training tutorials and learn more from our webinar from last week.  Suggestion: Create a time for the team to experiment building a website for themselves to get ideas and build the team knowledge.
Project Planners - You can customize the project planner to meet your needs (decide if you want a planner PER event or for the entire year). This is your roadmap to help guide your planning, so customize as you see fit. We know dates and plans will change but this will get your started. 
Proposed budget - How do you think you will use your money this year? Make a plan. You are welcome to also solicit in-kind donations, other grants, and possibly charge for an event. Details discussed in last week's webinar.

SPOTLIGHT: COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION WEEK!


THE GOAL:​ Participate in Computer Science (CS) Education Week on December 3-9th, 2018 and tell us about it!
Complete at least one of the activities below and take images and post to social media so we know it happened.

GET STARTED:
  • Bring Hour of Code to your school for at least 10 students. Get Involved
  • Try your hand at building your Girls Build website as a team!
  • Check out these articles  - from Code.org; from Leslie Aaronson for ideas about how you can get involved in CS Ed week.
  • Microsoft Code Creators- Sign up for free 30 minute broadcasts during CS Ed Week. 
  • Join Hour of Code Creativity Campaign:   Post to Twitter or Instagram: Creativity is _______ What will you create? 

TELL US ABOUT IT:

We hope you have started to gather as a team to begin brainstorming, team building, and goal setting. As you continue to work on your project idea, you are free to change from your original plan if you have an idea that is stronger and more efficient.  

WEBINAR THIS WEEK!
We will discuss how to get started with your team and review expectations for the year at our first Webinar this Wednesday, November 14th at 3:00m. It will also be recorded and shared with you if you can’t make it or want to listen again. Sign up here.

COMPUTER SCIENCE EDUCATION WEEK IS DECEMBER 3-9TH!
This is a great community engagement opportunity for all our teams – especially those focused on STEM and Digital Media. Check out these articles  - from Code.org; from Leslie Aaronson for ideas about how you can get involved in CS Ed week.
Some ideas include:
  • Bring Hour of Code to your school for at least 10 students. Get Involved!
  • ​Host a CS Tech Jam See Event Kit!
  • Promote computer science locally. Get Advocacy Tools!
  • ​Inspire students to try computer science. Start inspiring!

Surveys: Girls Build team members can sign up for the newsletters through this survey. 

Media Releases: Please send us copies of media release forms from all team members by emailing girlsbuildla@lapromisefund.org. These were due November 12, 2018.

Looking for Inspiration? Remember we have a ton of helpful materials on our Website including curriculum and inspiration from past teams. The on-site Retreat Packet also include directions to create your website, project plan, and budget – everything you need to turn in to us by December 15, 2018. And so it begins! From this point on, you will receive weekly emails with updates about the Girls Build Challenge. These newsletters are meant for Girls Build teams – funded or not – to discuss, share, and use as a resource for your project. Please feel free to share with your networks. Girls Build team members can sign up for the newsletters through this survey. Newsletters can also be accessed on our website (http://www.girls-build.org/newsletters).

Surveys: Please fill out our Girls Build pre-surveys: Survey for students; Survey for Coordinator

Media Releases: You are going to be documenting this challenge with photographs, videos, and interviews of all program participants. In order to facilitate this, we are asking project coordinators to collect signed media release forms from all team members and email a copy to girlsbuildla@lapromisefund.org by November 12, 2018.

On-Site Retreat: We have created an on-site Retreat packet for you to use with your team. We recommend taking a few hours to sit down and really start to plan with your team. The retreat materials also include directions to create your website, project plan, and budget – everything you need to turn in to us by December 15, 2018. You know your team best so you can customize and personalize the Retreat packet as you see fit!

Webinar: Our first webinar will be Wednesday, November 14th, 2018 at 3:00pm. The topic will be Design Thinking: How to Get Started.  We invite you and the team to join. It will also be recorded and shared with you if you can’t make it or want to listen again. Sign up here.

Voter Registration Contest: Congratulations to all who participated in our contest. Collectively you registered over 3,000 people to vote from over 20 high schools around Los Angeles County. Stay tuned for our next contest around CS Ed Week!
