Hi There Coordinators!

After receiving feedback from some of you, the newsletters will be less image-heavy and more text-based to ease copying and pasting the information. It’s always helpful to get insight like this, so please feel free to reach out if you have any other thoughts.
Picture
  • Informal check-ins about the progress of your project since the mid-year review are currently underway. If you have not yet received an email from me (scarlettp@lapromisefund.org), please sit tight. If you have received an email – please remember to reply!
  • Review what your team needs to deliver HERE by May 3, 2020 for your final report. Get started updating your website now – we’re less than two months away from the end of the challenge year!
  • Add your event to the MASTER CALENDAR.
  • Please CASH YOUR GRANT CHECKS if you have not already done so – there’s a $35 re-issue fee if you miss the cashing deadline.
Picture
  • Encourage your team and networks to follow your Instagram account AND @girls_build. Get 20 people to do so and be awarded one bonus point at the end-of-year project evaluation and competition – this is the easiest way to expand your audience and maximize your impact.
  • March is Women’s Month! Tailor your posts to the theme and we’ll be sure to highlight you on our own account.
Picture
  • Q: My team was planning an event for community members outside my school (parents, other organizations), but the coronavirus concerns are requiring us to cancel/postpone it. What do we do?
    • A: First, if your project involves some kind of community gathering or outreach event, you now need to have a Plan B ready. Create it now if you don’t have one. The COVID-19 threat could continue to escalate in the next few months, and that will bring on more restrictions to your students’ activities. Think now, rather than later to limit the scope of your project to your campus/student body, and explore virtual engagement options. During the check-ins, we can talk through this on a team-by-team basis to determine the best plan forward.

  • Q:  We can’t execute what we planned to do because of pushback from the district/admin. What do we do?
    • A: With two months left in the challenge year, pivot to a new activity that won’t require sign-off. If it will help you to have Girls Build communicate with them, please let us know! We’re happy to help.

  • Our budget is limiting what we want to do. How do we keep going?
    • A: Think about your mission and some low/no-cost ways to elevate it. Engage your student body in interactive exercises – pledges, poster boards for students to sign with prompts related to forwarding your team’s mission, etc. Don’t forget the incentives to get them to come to your table in the first place.

A community clean-up, hosting a financial literacy workshop series, assembling and distributing hygiene kits, a clothing/food job – and there’s even more. Hello Coordinators!

At this point, all of you should have received an email with project feedback and grant updates. Please remember to review the feedback and follow up with any action items.

Overall, every team is making good progress towards achieving their goals. Some teams were already so exceptionally well-planned and executed that it blew us away. Great job all around. If you need inspiration, please check out other teams' projects + websites on our siteFrom now until May, your team will be responsible for implementing the events and initiatives you all have planned out. Keep in mind:

  1. Don't be afraid to recalibrate as you go while taking heed of our recommendations, but your fundamental project should not change at this point.
  2. The top projects will show: 1. depth of impact and how each event/effort relates back to the project goal AND connects to each other, and 2. Consistent change and impact that builds over the 5 months, rather than one, last-minute effort at the end of the year.
  3. Document your work, collect data, update your website frequently, and post on instagram as often as possible.
  4. We'll send out reminders through our newsletter and hold additional, optional check-ins from now until the final due date on 5/3/2020.
  5. For reference, here is all the information for everything you need to get ready for the final project competition.

They’re here – our newest cohort of Girls Build teams this school year! 65 teams from all over the country have taken on the Girls Build challenge where they will tackle issues they see in their community, like:
  1. Saving the bees! First-time team at Baxter College Ready High School in California wants to help regrow the bee population as they are largely responsible for the things essential to our lives such as food, animals, and plants.
  2. Upcycling plastic bags into sleeping mats – a two-pronged approach to address pollution and homelessness by the team in Pulaski Heights Middle School in Arkansas.
  3. Reducing negative impact that food desserts create by providing and empowering the community with healthier food options through bi-weekly farmers markets with organic produce grown from their very own school garden at Manual Arts High School in South Los Angeles.

We can't wait to see more as the school year unfolds!

Follow along and learn more about each team throughout the year by going to www.girls-build.org/year-5.
